Coach Roman Katz
Master of Sport of Fencing
Head Coach
Roman brings a wealth of experience to the fencing world, having both competed and coached for over 35 years.
A Champion's Pedigree:
- Hailing from St. Petersburg, Russia, Roman boasts a degree in physical education and the prestigious Master of Sport of Fencing title.
- As a member of both the St. Petersburg and National USSR fencing teams, he dominated tournaments until his retirement in 1985.
Coaching Excellence:
- Roman's passion for nurturing talent extends beyond his competitive career. He has coached extensively in Canada, developing nationally competitive programs at Brock University and Niagara Swords fencing clubs.
- His success stories include champions like Kyle Girard (Canadian National Saber Champion) and Mark Peros (Pan American Games Saber Team Bronze Medalist).
From Beginner to Champion:
- Roman welcomes fencers of all levels, fostering a love for the sport in beginners and guiding them towards achieving their full potential.

Early Fencing Journey:
- A young prodigy, Coach Philip began fencing at 12, flourishing on his Long Island high school team and earning multiple awards through his dedication.
Coaching and Expertise:
- Coach Philip transformed his love for fencing into coaching, becoming a saber specialist with a C rating that reflects his own skills.
Commitment to the Community:
- Cleveland became Coach Philip's new home in 2015, where he shares his fencing expertise with infectious enthusiasm.
